Currently we have just the one centre in Egypt, which covers the 416 square kilometers of Luxor. Although many owners will transport their animals several hours to come and see us, from as far as Hurghada on the Red Sea coast. There are approximately 425,000 people in Luxor most of whom have at least one animal.
Why Luxor?
Luxor was the ancient city of Thebes, the great capital of ancient Egypt. We needed to be in an area where there is the opportunity for financial support from tourism and awareness opportunities to tourists. Most of the animals are here working for the tourists. However, ACE knows that most visitors to Luxor rarely see the thousands of working animals serving the needs of the tourist industry. They are still used as the main transporters for most things, from bricks, steel and cement used in building, to the huge amount of food and drink consumed in Luxor every day. These animals are almost always overloaded and overworked.
There is also a huge sugar cane industry, with many donkeys hauling sugar cane for the first six months of the year. The sugar cane industry started back in the year 710, and Egyptians are considered to be the pioneers in refined sugar industry since the 9th and 10th centuries. Sugar cane is still one of Egypt's largest exports. So next time you put a spoon of sugar in your tea or coffee think of the hard working donkeys.
We would love to open more ACE hospital centres around Egypt, for example Edfu, Aswan, Alexandria, Cairo to name but a few but of course we need the sustained income before we can commit to this, and we need your help ...
